The exhibition, Pictures of Things: Contemporary Still Life Photography, was held at the Visual Arts Center, TCC at Olde Towne, Portsmouth, Virginia, from June 8 through August 10, 2008.

Pictures of Things featured work by 11 emerging and established photographers including: Christa Kreeger Bowden (Lexington, VA); Dornith Doherty (Southlake, TX); Victor Frailing (Chesapeake, VA); Rosanne Haaland (Suffolk, VA); Victoria Mara Heilweil (San Francisco, CA); James Henkel (Minneapolis, MN); Trish Igo (Denton, TX); Kally Malcom (Lincoln, NE); Lori Nix (Brooklyn, NY); Jill O’Brien (Denton, TX); and Angilee Wilkerson (Denton, TX).

In their distinctly different ways, the artists explored the changing face of early 21st century still life photography. Imagery included a variety of subjects from the documentation of dead animals and insects to the intimacy of an unmade bed. Toy knights, stacks of books and miniature catastrophic scenes were also represented in the exhibition. In most, ordinary objects were presented in unusual and compelling ways.

Works in Pictures of Things represented a number of photographic media and range in size from small to large-scale; they were created in black and white and color. Some were highly manipulated.
