What are databases? What are periodicals?
Introduction:
Welcome to the world of electronic research at Tidewater Community
College. You can access the Internet from any PC at the college.
In addition to the public Internet sites available to anyone
with a PC and an Internet connection, TCC provides access to
electronic research resources available only by paid subscription.
Due to licensing agreements, off campus access for some titles
is restricted to and accessible by TCC and
VIVA affiliated patrons only. Convenient access to both public
resources and the subscription-based resources is available
through the Learning Resources Centers (LRCs) web site.
General Description: The resources
identified on this site consist primarily of indexing and
abstracting
services; collections of articles from newspapers, magazines
and journals; and electronic reference sources. In many cases,
the material had previously been available at a TCC library
in print form. Access to these materials electronically greatly
expands and enhances their usefulness. What
are
periodicals?
Access: All of the resources are available
from the LRC home page under "Indexes and Databases by Title".
Selected resources are listed under "Reference" and under "Indexes
and Databases by Subject". In some cases, you may
have to choose the database you want from another list
after clicking
on the database title.
On Campus Access: All electronic resources
listed on the LRC web site are available at each campus LRC.
They are also available from any computer on campus with Internet
access, including computer labs and faculty and staff offices.
Off Campus Access: Access to the subscription-based
resources from off campus is available for TCC faculty, staff,
and registered students through the use of a proxy server. Instructions
for accessing materials through the proxy server can be found
by clicking on TCC Proxy from the home
page or other pages.
Full Text Availability: Many of the
resources available through TCC include the full text of the
material identified. In some cases, a resource may include
the full text of some materials and only identifying information
or an abstract of others. Some resources may contain only the
textual information from the original source while others
may include charts, graphs and illustrations. Some of the full
text materials may be in a format that requires separate software, such as Adobe Acrobat, to view.
